Overnight hike planned

Time: Cup Day long weekend - logistics TBC closer to the date. It's a 5½–6 hour drive to the start of the hike.

Experience required: Experienced and fit hikers only

This hike involves considerable elevation, rock scrambling, and off-trail walking in remote wilderness areas. Trip leaders will chat to you to ensure your experience is appropriate after you sign up.

Destination: Viking Circuit (from Mount Howitt)

Day 1: Drive up and camp at Macalister Springs / Vallejo Gantner hut 

Day 2: Mac Springs to Mount Speculation via the Cross-Cut Saw (12.4km, 600m vert)

Day 3: Mount Speculation to Viking Saddle (11.4km, 300m vert) – note no water at camp

Day 4: Viking Saddle to Wonnangatta River (6km, 350m vert / 860m descent, steep, off-trail walking)

Day 5: Wonnangatta River to Mount Howitt car park (14.1km, 1100m vert, steep off-trail walking)

Approx cost: fuel (note that this is a 650km return trip) + food. Gear hire is available $15 but if you need to hire gear, you are likely not suitably experienced for this trip.
